Hearing God’s voice has always been a controversial topic amongst even Christians themselves. So many people do not believe that God “the Holy Spirit” can talk to us. In fact, most people do believe and see people who claim to hear from Holy Spirit, as “delusional”. Some claim that God spoke through the Prophets in the past, but since after the Bible is written, He stopped talking to us. I will have to admit that I, was once among people, who had that believe system. I used to think that either they were hallucinating or they are lying. But fast-forward to today, I was wrong!
Bible in the book of Proverbs 14:18 tells us that, ignorant people, get what their foolishness deserves, but clever people are rewarded with knowledge. I will confirm that, for being ignorance of the fact that God still speak to us today, through “The Holy Spirit” who is also God (The third Person in Trinity) and, that He desires to speak to us every day, I did pay great price, for the years I wasted not hearing the Voice of the Holy Spirit, to direct my path. I wasted years walking blindly, and making decisions on my own, because I mocked people who are wise enough to listen to the Voice of the Holy Spirit, to direct their path. I wasted years making bad decisions, which I paid greatly for. But when I finally got to the last point of my own strength, and encountered The Lord Jesus, He opened my eyes to the fact that, He do speak to people, and He desires to do so, only if we are ready to build and maintain a strong relationship with Him.
The Holy Spirit, speaks so clear, but it takes time to start discerning His voice. Our enemy the devil want to make us believe that God does not speak to people. He preys on our ignorance. And, even the Bible says that, God’s people perish for lack of knowledge. “perish” exactly what the devil want for us, “to perish”. He knows that, if he can make us believe that God does not speak, and make us see people that hear from God as delusional, we will never seek to hear from God. And if we cannot hear from God, we will never know his schemes and how to attack him back.
When I was trying to hear God’s voice at the beginning, I was confused, even the devil tried to manipulate me and make me to question so many things. It took almost one year of continuously working on my relationship with God, some mistakes and errors, to finally be able to discern the voice of God The Holy Spirit, with accuracy. I hear God’s Voice mostly through dreams and through the Holy Spirit speaking directly to my thoughts. It took some time to be able to differentiate from my own thoughts, thoughts from the devil and the Voice of God. The more you study the Bible, listen to sermons, pray constantly; His voice will start becoming clearer and clearer. The beautiful thing about hearing God’s voice is that once you start hearing his voice, He will start revealing secret things about your life, sharing ideas with you, both about business and your normal everyday life decisions. He will also reveal to you, who your enemies are, if you have any, and He will also show you who to make friends with and people to stay away from, people who are secretly working against you, even if you don’t know these people meant bad for you before. God will reveal where and how they have been working against you, and help you find ways to prevent those things from happening in the future. So, there are so many benefits in hearing God’s voice. Once you decode His voice, you will never want to make any life’s decisions again, without hearing from Him. Because Our God is sovereign. He is the beginning and the end, He knows the future and can direct you better, than you making your decisions blindly, and keep hitting the wall.
My own experience with hearing the Voice of The Holy Spirit, started from having vivid dreams, that all details and symbols, will not make sense to me when I woke up. I have never woken up from any dream and understand the meaning immediately. Most of the time if I wake up from a dream, the dream will not make sense to me until I pray about it, and ask the Holy Spirit for interpretation. And He will reveal the meaning to me instantly. The interpretation will just get downloaded to me, in a supernatural way. It’s a supernatural phenomenon, that you will need to experience on your own, for it to make sense to you.
When I started hearing the Holy Spirit speak to me, it first started like a whisper in my thoughts. The very first time I heard the voice of the Holy Spirit, was when I prayed and asked Our Lord Jesus, to encounter my sister and reveal himself to her. The first thing I heard was “I am the good Shepherd”. Now, before this time, I didn´t know this Bible verse. So, I stopped praying, rushed to google and typed the thing I heard. It took me directly to John 10:11-15. I read these verses and was astonished. This was when I newly encountered the Lord and each time I try to share my encounters with my sister, it will not make sense to her, and I wished so badly, that she should also have same encounter with the Lord, so that all that I was sharing with her, will make sense to her. The night after I heard that first voice, I had a dream, and the Lord showed me when, and how He is going to encounter my sister. And those things are starting to happen now, just like it was revealed to me in the dream. This is how I slowly started hearing His voice. At the beginning, it was just Bible verses. And this happens mostly, when I was worried or concerned about something. Either I will hear a bible verse, or hear some phrases that is related to a particular bible verse, and once I search that on google, it will be exactly the bible verse, that will be an answer to my questions or worries. And this will be a verse of the Bible that I have not read before or knew existed. When I marked that “still small voice” that whispers these words to me, I started paying attention to that Voice because, I knew it can only be the voice of God. It can’t be devil, because he “the devil” will be the last person to direct me to scripture for solution or an answer to my questions. And it can’t come from my own thoughts because, this was at the beginning of my Journey with the Lord and i grew up a catholic, so I was not familiar with Bible verses and quotations. So, when I realised that it was the voice of the Lord, I paid very good attention to that voice each time I hear it. Immediately the voice became clearer and recognised by me, it gradually developed into that same voice, helping to guide me on my everyday decision making and dream interpretations. And this mostly happens when am alone in my room, and when everywhere is quiet, especially, during prayers or when I woke up in the morning and everywhere is still.
One thing I know and can testify to today, is that God desires to talk to us and He wants us to hear Him. But, it takes time and patient for Him to build us into knowing and differentiating His Voice from other voices. Because, He do not want us to miss or mistake other voices for His voice. This may not be possible if you are being distracted by a lot of things. Because, like the Bible says, He do speak in a “still small voice”. I hardly hear God when I’m outside, discussing with people, or when am distracted by my Phone. It has mostly been at my alone time, in my room, during prayers, meditation or when I wake up and everywhere is quiet. Now, this may be challenging when you are sharing a room with someone, because there will be distractions. And distractions can quiet God’s Voice. That’s why most of the time, if God want to develop and build you into hearing His Voice, He will isolate you first, develop you, so you can know and learn and differentiate His Voice from other voices. But it’s also possible to hear from God, when you are sharing room, because God is willing to meet you, anywhere you are. I am only sharing my own experience.
Hearing God’s Voice, at this time and age, with all the distractions from social media, can be very challenging. So, it takes a lot of self-discipline. Social media can be your worst enemy, if you are trying to hear the Voice of the Holy Spirit. And most people are very addicted to social media, that before they sleep, and immediately the wake up, they are already distracted by their phones and other things. But when you are serious to hear His Voice, you will discipline yourself and dedicate your time more in listening to teachings and reading the Bible, God also speak through other means; through His written Words, through dreams, audibly, through His Ministers and Prophets, and through social media. So, there are so many other ways to hear from God, but it requires discernment.
Lastly, like I already said, He trained me to recognise His voice by giving me Scriptures first. Hearing the Voice of the Holy Spirit through others, is what I have also experienced lots of time. Especially when I am about to make or am already making a wrong decision. Hearing the Holy Spirit through other people, mostly come in form of an advice or encouragement especially from someone you did not expect it from. For an example; there was a day, my 8-year-old daughter came to my room, only to tell me that, Jesus loves me and He is going to take care of me. Now, this has never happened before, or again after that. I was not even showing any sign of worries and there is nothing going on, that will make her tell me that. It was just on a normal day and I was on a normal mood. This happened 2 years ago, and back then I was neither close to God nor do we discuss about God at home. Right then, I had no doubt in my mind, that it was God, who just spoke to me through her. So, hearing God through family and friends need to be carefully discerned. Because the devil, who is the father of all lies, can also mimic God. So we need to carefully think through, what the person is saying, does it align with the Word of God? Like in my daughter’s case, what she said is in alignment with the Word of God in Matthew 6:26-34.
So, it is very possible to hear God, even in this age and time. And this is the time we need to hear from Him more and let Him direct our path, because the days are evil and there may be things happening or about to happen that we may not know, except He reveals them to us. He sees and knows all things, both the past and the future.
Jesus did not go through the cross, suffered and sacrificed Himself for us, to not communicate with us. He desires to have a relationship with us, and also communicate with us. It’s impossible to have relationship with a person without communication. The question is, if you are willing to seek His Voice?
My final Scripture from 2 Corinthians 4: 3-4. And even if our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled, to those who are perishing. The god of this age (which is Satan) has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so they cannot see the light of the Gospel that displays the glory of Christ, Who is the Image of God. Satan’s strategy is to blind us, so we will never seek the Voice of the Holy Spirit. So many good and incredible things will start happening in your life, once you decode that “Still Small Voice”. I wish, I can wake this “sleeping Generation” up, to this Truth.
